Preparing Your Car for Track Days

Brake fluid, tyre pressures, coolant, alignment, and the realistic upgrade order.

01Start with the consumables

Before any money goes on power, the basics have to survive sustained full-throttle running. Brake fluid is the classic failure: standard DOT 4 boils under repeated hard braking, the pedal goes soft, and the session ends early. A high-temp DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 fluid with a fresh bleed is the single cheapest reliability upgrade on a track car.

Brake pads are next. Street pads fade on track by design. A quality track or dual-purpose pad keeps bite when everything is hot — and check the discs and fluid lines at the same time, because they're doing the actual work.

02Tyre pressures and health

Track running builds heat in tyres fast, and pressure rises with it. Start every session a couple of PSI below the hot target and check pressures while the tyres are hot — letting them down on cold tyres leads to massive over-pressure on track and greasy, sliding rubber. Also check for age, sidewall damage, and uneven wear patterns; a corded or cracked tyre is a retirement, not a lap.

Log hot pressures across sessions and you'll find the setup for your car's weight and compound. Consistency of tyre behaviour is what makes lap times comparable and progress measurable.

03Cooling and fluids

Sustained load raises coolant and oil temperatures far beyond street duty. Check the cooling system is bled and healthy, and know your temperature baselines before the first session so you can spot trouble early. If coolant temps climb past spec in a 30-minute session, the answer is usually ducting and cooling capacity — not more power.

Oil temperature matters just as much. Thin oil at high temperature loses pressure and film strength. Correct grade, correct level, and a healthy oil cooler if the car is repeatedly run hard are all part of track prep.

04Alignment and corner balance

Street alignment is optimised for tyre wear and straight-line stability; track alignment is set for turn-in and grip under load. A modest increase in front negative camber pays huge dividends in tyre life and cornering grip on track, and even pressure is critical for braking balance and tyre wear.

Corner balancing — setting the weights across each wheel — changes how a car settles into corners and brakes under load. On a track-focused car it's one of the most overlooked, most effective chassis jobs, especially after any ride-height change.

05The realistic upgrade order

Money spent in the wrong order is the most common mistake in track cars. Power comes last: tyres, brakes, cooling, and chassis set-up make you faster in a session than another 50 hp — and they keep the car alive long enough to use that power. The correct order is roughly: fresh fluids and pads, good tyres, alignment and corner balance, cooling, and only then power.

A modest, reliable car driven at its limit beats a big-power car that has to cool down every three laps. And bring data: lap times and tyre and temperature logs across sessions are how you decide what to change next.
