Common Performance Myths

Cold air intakes, octane boosters, and the marketing claims worth ignoring.

01Cold air intakes

'Cold air' intakes are the most oversold part in the industry. The factory airbox is often already drawing cool air from behind the bumper, and many aftermarket 'cold air' kits sit in the engine bay pulling warm air instead. A filter alone rarely adds measurable power on a stock engine — the real gains from intake work come once an engine is tuned and flowing more air.

Where an intake does matter is temperature control after tuning: lower and more stable intake air temperature means denser air, less ignition retard, and consistent power. Fit one for sound and for supporting a tuned setup — not for the mythical +15 hp the box promises.

02Octane boosters

Octane boosters raise the fuel's knock resistance — they do not add energy, and they do not 'unlock power' on a car tuned for normal pump fuel. A bottle of booster might lift a few tenths of a RON point, which is rarely enough to change a calibration, and some contain additives that can foul sensors or clog injectors at heavy doses.

If the engine needs more octane to run a map, the correct tool is higher-octane fuel (or ethanol in a flex-fuel setup), measured and tuned for — not an over-the-counter additive. On a car that's already knock-limited, real fuel is the fix.

03The 'stage' myth

'Stage 1', 'Stage 2', 'Stage 3' sound like a standardised scale, but they mean nothing consistent. Different tuners apply different labels to completely different hardware lists — one shop's Stage 2 might be another's Stage 1. The label tells you nothing about boost, fuelling, or safety.

Ignore the marketing stage and read the parts list and the data: what hardware is required, what the boost and timing targets are, and what logs come with it. A properly documented custom map labelled 'custom' beats a mystery 'Stage 2 file' every time.

04Bolt-on exhaust 'gains'

An exhaust frees flow that the engine may or may not need. On a naturally aspirated car, a cat-back exhaust is mostly a noise change with a small mid-range gain. On a turbo car, the picture is different: the downpipe and catalytic converter sit before the turbine and can genuinely bottleneck flow and spool. A freer downpipe is a real, meaningful upgrade on a turbo engine.

The point is to buy the part that addresses the actual restriction — not the loudest, cheapest, or most brand-name option. And remember a freer exhaust usually demands a map rewrite, because the engine's behaviour changes once backpressure changes.

05Oil and fuel additives

Most engine additives are marketed fear: 'flush' this, 'protect' that, 'restore compression' with a bottle. The overwhelming majority have no measurable benefit and a few have real risks — solvent 'flushes' can dislodge debris into bearings, and compression 'restorers' are a band-aid that doesn't survive one oil change.

The proven maintenance is boring: correct oil grade and spec, changed on the right interval for your duty cycle, and good fuel. Spend the additive budget on a proper service or an oil analysis instead — that tells you what is actually happening inside the engine.
